(Expansion) - The Prince of the song, José José, died on Saturday at age 71.

José José's life was full of chiaroscuros even before his illness and the more than 250 million albums sold around the world were the product of a long road.

Although on March 15, 1970, the public of the Ferrocarrilero Theater gave a long standing ovation to what they called an “extraordinary interpretation”, the jury did not favor him with the victory, but his destiny was already written. Thanks to El triste, the nickname of The Prince of the Song was born and would travel the world with his voice.

The song composed by Roberto Cantoral obtained third place in the II Festival of Latin Song and became an international success when it was published in countries such as the United States, Russia, Japan, Israel and Latin America.

José José sold more than 250 million records, making him one of the most successful Latin Americans in history. His music reached non-Hispanic countries such as Saudi Arabia, Japan, Israel, Egypt and Russia.

He received nine Grammy nominations and worldwide awards. Scenarios such as Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Las Dunas and the National Auditorium recorded sold out locations every time they performed in concert.

With the type of baritone voice, his career began playing guitar and singing in serenades during adolescence. He later joined a jazz and bossa nova trio in which he sang and played bass and double bass, according to his official Facebook site.

To talk about its beginnings is to go back to the sixties when the radio was listening to the rock of Elvis Presley and the music of The Beatles, The Teen Tops or The Back Jeans, but José José did not adopt those rhythms and preferred romantic ballads.

In December 1969 he found the perfect song to take off. It was The ship of oblivion, by the composer Dino Ramos. A few days after becoming known the subject became a success on the radio and since then began to taste the honeys of success.

Regarding his career as an actor, the artist participated in the films Looking for a Smile (1971), Dream of Love, The Career of the Million (1973), Gavilán or Paloma (1985). The latter was an autobiographical film in which he captured his triumphs and decays.

Three years later, Sabor spoke to me, directed by René Cardona Jr. and in 1995 he performed in Forgive Me All, next to Alejandra Ávalos.
