Washington (CNN) - Americans are divided over a political trial of President Donald Trump and his dismissal, while support for that measure has increased among independent voters and Republicans, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS following the announcement of a Formal investigation for a political trial made by House Democrats last week.

Approximately half of those consulted, 47%, support the president's political trial and remove him from office, compared to 41% who thought the same in a CNN survey conducted in May. The current level coincides with the highest point on a Trump political trial recorded in previous CNN polls: 47% said they felt the same in September 2018.

  • Trump's allies are worried because he doesn't understand the seriousness of the battle for political judgment

The portion that favors political judgment and impeachment now far exceeds the portion that says not to say that - something that occurs for the first time in CNN polls - although the two figures are within the margin of error of the survey. In the new survey, the opposition to the measure stands at 45%, compared to 54% who expressed the same opinion in May, reaching the lowest level in CNN surveys on this subject.

The change observed with respect to May occurred mainly between independents and Republicans. About three quarters of the Democrats are in favor of a political trial against Trump and his dismissal, roughly the same as in May, while among the independents, support for the political trial and the impeachment has increased 11 points, to 46% , and 8 points, at 14%, among Republicans.

The change has also come noticeably among younger Americans. 60% of those under 35 now say they support Trump's impeachment and impeachment, compared to 43% who thought so in May, while support for the measure among older Americans has practically remained the same (42% now compared to 40% in May). CNN's previous polls on the political trial did not register a gap as marked by age.

And that change is concentrated on the side of the Republican Party. Among Republicans and independents who are inclined to Republicans under 50, support for Trump's impeachment and his impeachment has increased from 9% in May to 22% now, while opinions between Republicans and independents who They are inclined to the older Republicans have remained with only 8% in favor of political trial and dismissal.

The survey also found that 48% say Trump used the presidency inappropriately to gain political advantage against a possible 2020 opponent in his interactions with the President of Ukraine, 39% say he did not use his office improperly and the 10% say they don't know enough to comment.

The partisan division in this question reflects that of political judgment and dismissal: 74% of Democrats say they used the office improperly, along with 47% of independents and 17% of Republicans. Approximately seven in 10 Republicans (71%) say that Trump's actions in this situation were not misuse of the charge.

Americans are more favorable to the view that most congressional Democrats support the accusation because they believe Trump committed crimes that justify a political trial (49%) than because they are trying to beat Trump at all costs (38%). That is a change in public sentiment about the motivations of the majority in the House of Representatives regarding the case of former President Bill Clinton. In 1998, just before the full House of Representatives voted to dismiss Clinton, 47% believed that most Republicans in Congress backed the impeachment because they went against Clinton, while 42% said it was because the Most Republicans in Congress thought he had committed crimes that justified a political trial.

On the Republican side, the public is equally divided on whether their opposition to the political trial against Trump is greater because they are trying to protect the president at all costs (42%) or because they believe he has not committed crimes that justify a trial. political (43%). That is a narrower division than in the public perceptions of Democratic management regarding the Clinton case; 51% thought that House Democrats wanted to protect Clinton at all costs.

This CNN survey was conducted by SSRS using its Omnibus survey platform. The interviews were conducted by landline and cell phone to 1,009 adults across the country between September 24 and 29. The results of the entire sample have a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points. This is higher among the subgroups.
