Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani discussed the situation in Syria and the Iranian nuclear agreement during their meeting today in the Armenian capital Yerevan on the sidelines of the Eurasian Economic Council meeting.
Putin said the meeting was an opportunity to continue discussions between the two sides "on bilateral issues, the joint comprehensive action plan, the nuclear agreement and the situation in the region, including the situation in the Syrian Arab Republic," the Kremlin said in a statement on its website.
"We meet with you and work together regularly, and given the dynamics of the situation in the region and our bilateral relations, we always have something to talk about and discuss," Putin told his Iranian counterpart during the meeting.
Putin noted that Iran is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, stressing that this serves the interests of both countries and is in line with the basic principles of international law and the provisions of the World Trade Organization.
In turn, the Iranian president noted the development of bilateral relations, pointing out that the two countries have reached an "unprecedented level of openness and openness over 500 years of the history of their relations."
"The success of the nuclear agreement depends on the full and consistent implementation of the obligations of all signatories and their support," Rowhani said, stressing that Moscow plays an important role in implementing the provisions of the agreement.
The summit of the leaders of the member states of the Council of the European Union - Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia - began in Yerevan today.
During the summit, the president of Moldova was invited as head of the EU observer state, as well as the Iranian president and the prime minister of Singapore as guests of honor.
