(CNN) - Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex, is suing a tabloid from the United Kingdom, claiming that a private letter was illegally published in the Mail on Sunday . In an extraordinary statement announcing the measure, her husband, Prince Enrique, also accused the newspaper of selectively editing the letter to hide "lies" that the newspaper had said about the duchess, a claim that the newspaper specifically denies.

Enrique added that “this particular legal action depends on an incident in a long and disturbing pattern of behavior by the British sensationalist media. The content of a private letter was illegally published in an intentionally destructive manner to manipulate you, the reader, and the polarizing agenda of the media group in question. ”

The law firm Schillings, which represents the Duchess, said legal proceedings were initiated against the Mail on Sunday and its parent company, Associated Newspapers, for the misuse of private information, copyright infringement and non-compliance of the United Kingdom Data Protection Act of 2018.

A newspaper spokesman said: “ The Mail on Sunday keeps the story he published and will defend this case vigorously. Specifically, we categorically deny that the Duchess's letter has been edited in any way that has changed its meaning. ”

When asked about the announcement of the lawsuit, John Wellington, managing editor of The Mail on Sunday , did not comment on when the newspaper heard about the lawsuit, or on which law firm represented the company.

Enrique and Meghan currently travel through southern Africa. The timing of the lawsuit is not related to his travels, but to specific legal advice, a palace source told CNN on Tuesday. The source asked not to be named discussing the private affairs of the couple.

In his statement, Enrique said that he and his wife believed in "objective and truthful reports" and that the couple considered media freedom as a "cornerstone of democracy."

But he also said that he felt that some reports about his wife were "intimidating" and that he feared that "history would be repeated", an apparent reference to Diana, who was the subject of fierce media attention and died in a car accident in Paris while his driver fled the paparazzi.
