Of those injured, 15 were treated by doctors in the field and seven were transported to local hospitals.

(CNN) - A military training exercise at Camp Shelby left at least 22 paratroopers injured and several of them "in the trees," said a US Army official. But the authorities do not know what went wrong during the night jump.

Of those injured, 15 were treated by doctors in the field and seven were transported to local hospitals, according to the spokesman for the US Army in Alaska, John Pennell.

Members of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 25th Alaska Infantry Division were performing night jumps at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, said spokeswoman Captain Ashley Sangster. Three planes were operating near two jump sites in a military exercise, Sangster said.

On the first pass to a drop zone near Camp Shelby, something went wrong and several in the unit ended up "in the trees," Sangster said. The weather was "good" and the plane landed safely, Sangster said, so authorities are still trying to determine what went wrong.

There were 84 infantry members who were to be part of the jump and all the soldiers were counted. Base officials said everyone was dedicated to recovering the soldiers from the trees.

Some soldiers suffered limb injuries due to hard landings, but none of the injuries are life-threatening, Sangster said.

In a Facebook post, the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division said Wednesday was the start of a 10-day training exercise with 650 soldiers. The publication added that Forrest General Hospital was notified of possible injuries in advance and that emergency vehicles were waiting.

“Airborne operations carry an inherent risk. We strive to mitigate this risk as much as possible, ”the team said on Facebook. “Once all the soldiers have been counted, our goal is, ultimately, to continue training. Despite the challenges we face today, soldiers always put the mission first. ”

Camp Shelby is a military post located on the southern border of Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

A US Army recruitment battalion In the US, @GoArmyMidwest tweeted on Tuesday that paratroopers from the 25th Infantry Division were leaving their home in Alaska for Camp Shelby "with a minimum notice of an Emergency Deployment exercise."

The Combat Team of the 4th Brigade (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division this week has posted many videos on its official Facebook page documenting its paratrooper training at Camp Shelby.
