Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov affirmed that the formation of a constitutional discussion committee is an important step in the political process to solve the crisis in Syria, noting that only the Syrians decide the future and constitution of their country in accordance with resolution 2254.
Lavrov said in an interview with Arab media published today that the launch of the work of the Committee will provide a boost to the political process in Syria, considering that the conditions were established to accelerate this process after the strong strikes against terrorist organizations in Syria.

On the other hand, Lavrov pointed out that his country's participation in the war against terrorism in Syria came at the request of the Syrian government, pointing out that the only basis for any foreign presence on Syrian territory could be based on the invitation of the legitimate authorities or on the basis of a resolution by the Security Council. The US presence in Syria is illegal and aims to prevent the restoration of security and stability in Syria in direct violation of Security Council Resolution 2254.
Regarding the situation in the Gulf region, Lavrov warned of the escalation of tension in the region as a result of the policies of the United States and said: “The development of the situation in the Gulf reached dangerous levels as a result of Washington's irresponsible policies that have not only shirked their obligations under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action adopted by the Security Council. No. 2231, stressing that Washington has been engaged in provocative actions that led to the escalation of tension in the Gulf.
Lavrov pointed to the Russian initiative for Gulf security, noting that it assumes a positive regional and unifying agenda and the establishment of mechanisms for joint action to face the challenges and risks in order to launch a targeted and gradual process through which the views of all parties are taken into account.
Regarding Western policies in the world, Lavrov pointed out that the military intervention and wars by the United States and other countries that violate international law have resulted in destabilizing the situation in different parts of the world, pointing out that Washington and a number of other Western capitals bet on establishing their dominance in international affairs and used force The military as a means to achieve its objectives besides the policy of sanctions, extortion, pressure and falsification of facts.
