Protests in Iraq: Government imposes curfew in Baghdad

The anger of the Iraqis about the conditions in the country is growing, again there were some violent clashes with the police. The government is now responding with an indefinite curfew in the capital.



After some violent protests and clashes between police and demonstrators, the Iraqi leadership imposed a curfew in Baghdad on the night of Thursday. The announced head of government Adel Abdel Mahdi, according to the agency Ina. The lock is perpetual, with the exception of only employees of emergency services and travelers on the way to the airport.

Previously, Iraqi security forces in the capital Baghdad had once again crack down on protests. Thousands of people had again demonstrated against corruption and political stalemate in several parts of the city. Therefore, security forces with tear gas and shots in the air tried to dissolve the protests. In pictures of the TV station Al-Sharqiya was seen how protesters locked a street and light tires.

Despite an initial blockade by security forces, demonstrators in Baghdad reached central Tahrir Square, with more people gathering at the airport later. In the so-called Green Zone, where in addition to Iraqi government buildings also several embassies are, were increasingly security forces in action

There were also protests in other provinces of the country. In five demonstrators, according to eyewitnesses stormed some buildings and set fire. In the provinces of Nasirija and Dhi Kar, a curfew effective at 8 pm was imposed.

In Iraq, there is a great deal of frustration among the population, partly because of the poor infrastructure and unemployment. So the country is one of the largest oil producers in the world, but suffers from a lack of energy. Many areas are still destroyed after the fight against the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS).

Already on Tuesday protests broke out in Baghdad and other cities in the country against the political leadership of the country against which the security forces proceeded by force. According to the government, two people lost their lives and at least 200 others were injured.

The United Nations and the US Embassy in Baghdad were concerned about the violence and called for restraint. Everyone has the right to speak freely, explained UNO Envoy in Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert.
