The former chancellor will probably also be the future: After the victory of the ÖVP in the Austrian election Sebastian Kurz may form a government. Federal President Van der Bellen wants to officially commission him on Monday.

The second chance for Sebastian Kurz is official: Austria's Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen will give the ÖVP boss on Monday the order to form a new government. This was announced by the Presidential Chancellery. Shortly on Monday morning will meet for this occasion for a conversation with the head of state.

The former and probably future Chancellor emerged as the clear winner of the parliamentary election on 29 September. According to the official final result, the ÖVP comes to 37.5 percent of the vote. This is an increase of six percentage points compared to the election 2017. The SPÖ lost 5.7 points and fell to a historic low of 21.2 percent of the vote, the FPÖ slumped after the Ibiza affair to 16.2 percent (minus 9 , 8 percentage points).

Kurz also wants to probe with the FPÖ

The Greens were able to convince 13.9 percent of the voters and thus overcame clearly the four percent hurdle on which the party had failed two years ago. The liberal Neos also made it to parliament with 8.1 percent (plus 2.8 points). The turnout was 75.6 percent.

Kurz has announced that he will conduct exploratory talks with all parties represented in parliament in order to clarify the possibility of a coalition. While a coalition with the SPÖ is considered unlikely, many speculate about a possible alliance of ÖVP and Greens.

Even a re-launch of the coalition with the FPÖ can not be ruled out, even though the right-wing populists actually want to renew themselves in the opposition. FPÖ leader Norbert Hofer said that because of the electoral decree, he does not necessarily see his party in government.

The alliance of ÖVP and FPÖ was broken in May at the Ibiza affair to Heinz-Christian Strache. Strache has since withdrawn from politics.
