Baghdad-Sana
Iraq's supreme religious authority has called for the language of reason to prevail and to avoid violence during demonstrations in the country.
"In the past few days, there have been unacceptable and condemned attacks on peaceful demonstrators, security forces and property," he said in a statement during a sermon on Friday.
The statement called on the government to work to improve services, provide jobs and hold accountable those who fail.
Earlier in the day, Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi stressed the need to respect the rule of law and restore life to normal in the Iraqi provinces, calling for not escalating the demonstrations, which "leads to loss of life."
Baghdad and a number of Iraqi provinces yesterday witnessed the emergence of sporadic demonstrations demanding better services and job opportunities, while a parliamentary source confirmed that the Iraqi parliament will discuss the demands of the demonstrators at its next meeting on Saturday.
