Since spring 2018 Richard Grenell is US ambassador to Germany. In the future, he will take over yet another office: US President Donald Trump makes the top diplomats Balkan envoy. The White House said Trump has nominated the 53-year-old as a special envoy for the peace negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
Grenell was appointed ambassador to Berlin in May 2018. The Trump supporter uses his ambassador's office for often offensive announcements to the Federal Government and thus breaks with the usual diplomatic restraint. That has brought him much criticism in Germany.
He obviously enjoys a good reputation with Trump. In the past, he has repeatedly been in high spirits, such as the National Security Advisor or the US Ambassador to the United Nations.
Grenell will now deal with the difficult conflict between Serbia and Kosovo. Kosovo unilaterally declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. However, the government in Belgrade still regards Kosovo as a Serbian province. The Kosovo war killed more than 13,000 people.
