BAGHDAD - The Iraqi capital Baghdad has arrested a number of demonstrators who planned to cause chaos and were carrying Molotov cocktails during the recent demonstrations, stressing that "security in Baghdad is controlled."
"The security forces tried to arrest a sniper who was targeting the protesters but managed to escape to an unknown destination," Baghdad operations chief Lieutenant General Jalil al-Rubaie told a news conference. .
Rubaie stressed that "security in Baghdad is controlled and there should be no chaos," calling on the demonstrators to "restraint and protect state institutions."
The Iraqi security media cell announced yesterday the killing of four people, including two members of the security forces shot by unidentified snipers in Baghdad.
Meanwhile, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mohammed Halbousi met with a number of representatives of the demonstrators inside the House of Representatives.
A parliamentary source said that "Halbousi discussed with the representatives of the demonstrators their legitimate demands and ways to meet them in accordance with the law."
Baghdad and a number of provinces have seen sporadic demonstrations calling for better services and jobs, while Iraqi officials called for community security, non-violence and the safety of demonstrators and security forces.
