In France, a police employee killed four colleagues. After that, there was growing evidence of a terrorist background. Investigators now say the perpetrator was a follower of a radical form of Islam.

According to the prosecution, the man who killed four people in the Paris police department was a follower of a radical form of Islam. He also had contacts with members of the radical Islamic Salafist movement, said prosecutor Jean-François Ricard on Saturday in Paris. The 45-year-old had converted to Islam about ten years ago.

The long-time employee of the police department had stabbed four colleagues on Thursday and injured two others before he was shot dead by a policeman.

The man had exchanged prior to the act by mobile phone only religious news with his wife. This was not known to the investigators as terrorist.

The attacker had expressed approval for the Islamist assassination of the satirical magazine "Charlie Hebdo" in January 2015.

The anti-terrorism investigators of the prosecutor's office had taken on Friday the investigation into the knife attack. First, it was said after the fact that the attacker was mentally ill.
