Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev condemned the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and about 70 other countries in the world.

"Russia considers it unacceptable to use sanctions in the international arena and coercive measures against countries such as Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Cuba, and about 70 other countries that are victims of interventionist policies and violations of the principles enshrined in the Charter," Medvedev said in a speech at the University of Havana following an honorary doctorate in political science. Medvedev stressed the need to strengthen relations between Russia and Latin American countries and said that "this region is a key arena for cooperation and not a backyard as the United States believes."

He noted the importance of strengthening cooperation with Cuba as a reliable ally in the region, which is reflected in the growing trade exchange and the development of joint development projects between the two countries.

Medvedev called for dialogue to resolve the crisis in Venezuela, noting that only Venezuelans can overcome their differences by following the dialogue approach, stressing at the same time that there is only one president elected in Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro.

The President of the University of Havana, Maryam Nicado, said that Medvedev's honor comes in recognition of his important role in political life and intellectual activity, which served as the basis for the successful performance of his responsibilities on the national and international arena.

On Thursday, Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel received Medvedev and signed nine cooperation agreements between the two countries in scientific, technical, customs and other matters.
