The Baghdad Provincial Council accepted the resignation of Governor Falah al-Jazairi, who presented it today.
According to Iraqi state television, "the Baghdad Provincial Council voted to accept the resignation of the governor Falah al-Jazairi from office."
An informed source said that the council opened the door for nomination to choose an alternative to Algeria.
Baghdad and a number of provinces have seen sporadic demonstrations calling for better services and jobs, while Iraqi officials called for community security, non-violence and the safety of demonstrators and security forces.
Parliament Speaker Mohammed al-Halbousi met yesterday with a number of representatives of the demonstrators in the House of Representatives and discussed with them their legitimate demands and ways to meet them in accordance with the law.
