(CNN) - Five elephants and a 3-year-old offspring died in a waterfall in Thailand during what authorities believe was an attempt by adults to save the youngest.
The incident occurred on Saturday at the Haew Narok waterfall, in Khao Yai National Park.
Two surviving elephants were trapped in the waterfall for hours before national park officials saved them and fed them with pineapples, bananas and sugarcane covered with supplements.
Authorities were notified that elephants were screaming from the waterfall and when they arrived, they discovered the body of the offspring, said Khanchit Srinoppawan, head of Khao Yai National Park. The five dead adult elephants were found in another part of the waterfall.
The waterfall is closed to the public since the incident.
