Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov stressed the need for the United States and Russia to enter into serious talks on the situation surrounding the deployment of medium and short-range missiles.
"If the United States deployed such missiles near our country, we will have to defend ourselves," Antonov told the Fort Ross Dialogue Forum on Wednesday. "It is time to sit down in Geneva, Moscow or Washington and take these issues seriously."
Antonov stressed the need to extend the START III treaty in its current form, which is very easy, adding today there is one treaty between the United States and Russia, START III and in February 2021 will expire and will not exist and this will be the first time in 50 years.
The Russian ambassador expressed Moscow's readiness to discuss other strategic stability issues with the United States. "If Washington, like Russia, has concerns in this regard, it is time to meet and address these issues. We are ready and we are still waiting for a positive response from the American side," he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech during the plenary session of the 16th session of the Valdai Club that the situation related to security in the world has not improved but deteriorated due to US actions and its withdrawal from the agreement on medium and short-range missiles.
Antonov ruled out the outbreak of a nuclear war between Russia and the United States.
