The topic of the day: Excitement about climate protection law, "Extinction Rebellion" in Berlin

This week is once again dominated by the climate. In Berlin and other major European cities, as well as in Australia and New Zealand, there are extensive protests of the movement "Extinction Rebellion". And on Wednesday, the federal government wants to pass its climate protection law, along with the long version of their climate package.

It is already clear that the law will not appease the demonstrators. Even as the Grand Coalition had agreed on the cornerstones for a package of measures at the end of September, there was much criticism. The solutions were too timid and did not go far enough, it said.

The Climate Protection Act, which is part of the government's efforts to combat climate change, is now apparently less ambitious than planned in the first draft of SPD Minister of the Environment Svenja Schulze from February.

According to the current draft, about which the SPIEGEL first reported on the weekend, for about 2040 no national target for CO2 savings will be defined any more. The control mechanisms for compliance with the climate targets were also weakened - this sounded different in the key issues paper on the climate package of September.

The changes were again sharp criticism. From a "declaration of bankruptcy" of the Federal Government was among other things the speech. Chancellor Angela Merkel defended the law.

The protest of "Extinction Rebellion" started in parallel already. The activists paralyzed a hub of traffic in Berlin by sitting blockades. One of them explains in an interview why they are doing that. Already when some Hamburg members of "Extinction Rebellion" planned their actions, our reporter Dialika Neufeld was there.

This year German arms exports could reach a record high. By the end of September alone, the Federal Government allowed exports totaling 6.35 billion euros. The current high of 7.86 billion euros (2015). Compared to the same period last year, this represents an increase of 75 percent. Among the ten countries that received the most arms from Germany are two nations involved in the Yemen War.
