The Rural Women's Food Processing Unit, which opened in Rabah village in western Homs countryside, is an additional step towards community development, women's empowerment and improved livelihoods.
The unit provided by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is multi-purpose and can be used in the food processing of milk, cheese and fruits with a focus on apple products, which is famous for Rabah and neighboring villages.
Homs Agriculture Director Eng. Nazih Al-Rifai said that the diversity of products within the manufacturing unit aims at developing production and marketing it to local markets.
Mona Mahfoud, Head of the Rural Women Department at the Directorate of Agriculture, explained that the opening of the manufacturing unit was accompanied by an exhibition of rural women's products and witnessed a large turnout from the villagers and neighboring villages. Being the only one that specializes in apple products.
Mahfoud explained that he works in the manufacturing unit with a profit of eleven productive women who underwent a training course under the supervision of specialists in food processing.
Khalil al-Jani from the FAO office in Homs pointed out that the unit was established in Rabah village because it is famous for producing apples with the aim of supporting the local community and marketing its products.
