The theme of the day: betrayal of the Kurds

Through the use of the Kurdish-led "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF), the caliphate of the "Islamic State" was defeated. Since then, the Kurdish-controlled area in northern Syria has been comparatively quiet. A decision by Donald Trump will probably change that.

The US president announced on Monday to withdraw the thousand US troops from the area. He clears the way for the threatened invasion of the Turks - and abandons their erstwhile allies. For the Kurds, after the betrayal, the Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad is the closest ally. Read an analysis here.

Trump not only caught the Kurds cold with his announcement. In Washington, both Democrats and Republicans have been surprised by the decision. And the President's plans are vehemently rejected beyond the party boundaries. The critics of Trump's Syria policy are concerned with the security of the Kurds as well as the US image as a reliable ally.

Trump himself defends his course. Finally, he wanted to redeem his election pledge to withdraw US troops from "unnecessary wars". The Kurds now have to settle their affairs themselves.

The Ruhr area is a social case: the pot reminds today in many places to East Germany shortly after the turn. This is especially visible in the city of Herne. My colleague Lukas Eberle was there to answer a question: do we need the Aufbau West?

A shock therapy for the country: The series "Jerks" is embarrassing, crude and politically incorrect. Exactly what Germany needs right now. Doer Christian Ulmen is not really successful with that. Maybe the audience would rather like him as a "crime scene" commissioner?

My evening: the recommendations for your end of workday

Make a detour to the bookstore: there you will find the new book by Deniz Yücel. The journalist was detained for one year in Turkey. In "Agent Terrorist" he spends his time in prison - and provides a precise description of the political situation in Turkey since the beginning of the protests in Gezi Park 2013. By the way, the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave the title to the book - but without it to suspect.
