New York (CNN Business) - Instagram has launched a dark mode option, making it the last important application that joins the trend of reduced eyestrain, battery saving and elegant appearance that is sweeping the world.

The new appearance of the photo sharing application is similar to that of its rivals: embrace the darkness by changing the default white background to black and gray. Instagram made the feature available to iOS and Android users in an update released on Monday, according to Instagram boss Adam Mosseri.

To activate the dark mode on an iPhone, users need to have iOS 13 because the new display option is only accessible through Apple's new settings. After opening the Settings menu, users should touch Screen and Brightness and press the Dark option on the right. Instagram will automatically change to this feature.

Android 10 users can activate it in a similar way by activating looking for the dark mode in the menu settings. It can also be activated from the application settings for Android phone owners, even if they don't have the latest version of the Google operating system.

Facebook, owner of Instagram, still does not have support for the dark mode. But the social network is testing it, according to multiple reports. Dark mode is currently available for the Facebook Messenger application.

Dark mode is the preferred appearance for some people because it is easier for the eyes. Google launched this feature for the Gmail application last month. The company said this mode prolongs battery life because darker pixels require less energy than lighter ones. On some screens, black pixels do not require energy.

Dark mode is the fashion of the moment, increasingly popular on several platforms and devices, including Twitter, Samsung Galaxy smartphones, Google's Chrome browser, Windows 10 and Apple's iOS and MacOS software. Apple's support page for installing the dark mode on Mac states that the configuration "makes it easier to stay focused on work, because its content stands out while dark controls and windows recede in the background."

Google launched a dark mode option throughout the system on Android 10. The theme changes the colors of the menus and the phone's home screen, but only some applications support it.
