Iraqi President Barham Saleh called today for a judicial investigation into the attacks on demonstrators and security forces during the recent demonstrations in a number of Iraqi provinces.
In a statement, the Iraqi presidency said in a statement that President Saleh stressed during his meeting with the President of the Supreme Judicial Council in Iraq, Faeq Zidan, "the need for a fair judicial investigation into the crimes of assaulting demonstrators and security forces and firing live bullets during the recent protests." According to the statement, Saleh pointed to the importance of cooperation and coordination between the three authorities to complete the legal procedures related to the implementation of the legitimate demands of the demonstrators and maintain security and protect the Constitution.
Baghdad and a number of provinces have seen sporadic demonstrations calling for better services and jobs, while Iraqi officials called for community security, non-violence and the safety of demonstrators and security forces.
