The French candidate for the European Commission will have to pass a second passing exam before MEPs, the European Parliament announced on Wednesday. The hearing will take place on Thursday morning.
The MEPs decided Wednesday, October 9, after Sylvie Goulard answers to their written questions, to ask him to have a new audition, which will take place from Thursday morning from 9:30 to 11 am. The new European Commission will take office on 1 November.
MEPs want clarification on the case of assistants of MEPs Modem where she is involved, as well as on her work as a consultant for more than 10 000 € monthly, for a US think tank, Institut Berggruen, between October 2013 and January 2016, even though she was a MEP.
Sylvie Goulard has already given her arguments
The French candidate for the European Commission has already answered extensively during a first hearing before MEPs on 2 October. She had then recalled that the case concerning her former assistant was part of a procedure of too long dismissal and that the money had been refunded since.
On the question of the work with the American think-tank, she explained that the remuneration corresponded to the habits of the international organizations and that the services of the European Parliament had not seen fit to start a procedure against her.
In its written answers, the French candidate to the European Commission on Tuesday ruled out automatically resigning from the European executive if she was indicted in the case of fictitious jobs of assistants of MEPs Modem.
Convocation Thursday morning
The coordinators of the political groups of the European Parliament have nevertheless decided to summon Sylvie Goulard for a second hearing Thursday morning to allow him to dispel doubts about his integrity, we learned from a parliamentary group.
"Ms. Goulard was called Thursday morning for a second audition from 9:30 to 11 am during which thirteen questions will be asked. A decision will then be taken on whether or not to be appointed commissioner, " said a spokesman for the group of the European People's Party (EPP, where sit the Republicans). If the EPP has maintained its line, a large part of the coordinators from the Social Democrats voted against the principle of this second hearing.
After its hearing, it is by a simple majority that the MEPs of the parliamentary committee will decide whether or not to validate the candidacy of Sylvie Goulard.
