Erwin Sellering (SPD) retires completely from politics for reasons of age. "I'll be 70 this month. And I think that's a fitting moment to say: Now is the time to say goodbye to active politics," said Sellering in Schwerin in a surprisingly convincing press conference.
On October 18, his 70th birthday, he will participate for the last time in a session of the state parliament, to which he belongs since 2002. His departure from politics had nothing to do with his cancer, which had forced him in May 2017 to hand over the government office and the SPD state presidency. "As far as one can say with such a disease, I'm completely healthy and I feel very fit," said Sellering.
Sellering was head of state government between 2008 and 2017, then resigned. He was also SPD state chairman. After surviving illness, he returned again as a member of parliament in the state policy. In the coming week he wants to give up his Landtag mandate finally.
