After the attack on a synagogue in Halle (Saale), Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wants to visit the Jewish house of worship. Also planned is a meeting with Saxony Anhalt's Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU), said the Federal President.
Steinmeier had spoken after the attack on the synagogue of shattering news and called for solidarity with Jewish fellow citizens. At a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the peaceful revolution in Leipzig, Steinmeier said that such an attack on a fully occupied Jewish synagogue seemed unimaginable in Germany.
A heavily armed culprit had tried to invade the synagogue and cause a veritable massacre among dozens of believers (read what is known about the attack so far). His attempt failed, however, and he went to the synagogue and then to a nearby doner kebab. Takeaway shot two people and injured at least two more. The alleged perpetrator, who is said to be a right-wing extremist, has been arrested.
Seehofer also travels to Halle
Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) also wants to visit the city in Saxony-Anhalt. At a joint press conference with the President of the Central Council of Jews, Josef Schuster, and Saxony-Anhalt Interior Minister Holger Stahlknecht (CDU), he is to inform about the current state of investigation.
Seehofer had said on Wednesday evening, the Attorney General, who had drawn the investigation quickly, "have enough evidence of a possible right-wing extremist background." He spoke of an anti-Semitic motive.
