(Bleacher Report) - The Washington Nationals are heading to the National League Championship Series for the first time since they moved to the U.S. capital.

Washington defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers Wednesday 7-3 in the decisive Game 5 of the National League Division Series at Dodger Stadium. Howie Kendrick was the hero with a grand slam at the top of the tenth inning in front of Joe Kelly, all while Kenley Jansen and Julio Urias watched from the bullpen, after Anthony Rendon and Juan Soto helped force additional innings with consecutive home runs before Clayton Kershaw in the eighth.

Timely home runs drove the franchise to its first win in the playoff series out of a wild card game when it was in Montreal in 1981.

As for Los Angeles, this marks a bitter disappointment after finishing with a mark of 106 victories in the National League during the regular season. The Dodgers have not won a World Series since 1988.
