The inventors of lithium batteries received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Batteries are part of our daily lives. We use it every day, to operate mobile phones, tablets, and even electric cars!
According to the Royal Swedish Academy, batteries have even "transformed our society for the good of humanity". That's why the Academy decided to award the 2019 Nobel Prize in Chemistry to the inventors of the lithium-ion battery: John Goodenough, Stanley Whittingham and Akira Yoshino. Their names were unveiled Wednesday morning.
"The batteries look very simple to manufacture," said the Academy. But, in reality, it's very complicated! Most are very heavy, and can not store a lot of electricity.
John Goodenough is American. "He was interested in a surprising metal, explains the Academy: lithium. It's the lightest of all. And it tends to let go of its electrons, which generates electric current. "
