A Fondapol study reveals that 77% of French people are tempted by "electoral protest" in view of the presidential election of 2022.

More than three in four (77%) French are tempted by "the electoral protest" for the presidential election of 2022, according to a survey of the Fondapol published Thursday that uses an indicator adding abstention, white vote and "populist" vote.

In detail, 56% said they could abstain or vote blank in 2022. And 49% that they could vote for at least one of the "populist" parties and / or the revolutionary left.

The Foundation for Political Innovation, together with the OpinionWay Institute, and in partnership with Le Figaro, has developed an "indicator of electoral protest" that groups together several types of behavior: the availability to vote for parties and candidates under the "populist" offer (RN, LFI or Debout la France), but also for the parties of the revolutionary left (LO and NPA), abstention and the white vote.

The attraction of "right-wing populism"

For the 2022 presidential election, 77% of the 3,006 respondents for this new barometer (the same panel will now be polled every six months) answered yes ( "yes certainly" or "yes probably" ) to at least one of these six options: abstain, vote blank, vote for RN, for DLF, for LFI or for LO / NPA.

However, Fondapol notes that "right-wing populism" retains a higher capacity for attraction, since more than a third (36%) of respondents are considering voting for the RN or DLF, even though they are only A quarter (24%) say they could vote for at least one of the parties of the "populist" (LFI) or "revolutionary" left (LO / NPA).

The survey of Fondapol shows that in the past, most voters (85%) have already resorted to at least one of these forms of "electoral protest" against so-called "classic" parties.

A context "dégagiste"

Of respondents who say they have a positive image of yellow vests, 65% said they could vote in 2022 for at least one "populist" or revolutionary training (in detail, 46% for RN or DLF, 37% for LFI or LO / NPA).

In this "free" context, Fondapol notes that "populist leaders" are also subject to a certain amount of usury. 57% of Jean-Luc Mélenchon's voters in 2017 want LFI to present another candidate in 2022. Similarly, 42% of Marine Le Pen's in 2017 are calling for another candidate for the RN.

Survey conducted online from 30 August to 6 September 2019 by OpinionWay for Fondapol with a sample of 3,006 people registered on the electoral lists established according to the quota method. Margin of error from 0.8 to 1.8 points.
