(CNN) - On World Death Penalty Day, we take a look at the situation of capital punishment in the United States.

In what states is it legal?

As of May 31, 2019, capital punishment is legal in 29 US states. UU.

According to the Death Penalty Information Center, 25 people were executed in the United States in 2018. The number of death sentences imposed was 42.

According to the Criminal Justice Project of the National Association for the Progress of People of Color (NAACP), there are 2,673 people sentenced to death in the United States (as of April 1, 2019).

Since 1976, when the United States Supreme Court reinstated the death penalty, 1,499 people have been executed (as of May 31, 2019).

Since 1973, there have been 165 exonerations in death row (as of May 2019). Twenty-nine of them are from the state of Florida.

Death penalty at the federal level and in the army

The United States Government and the Army have 62 people awaiting execution (as of December 21, 2018).

The United States Government has executed three people since 1988 when the federal death penalty statute was restored.

What happens to women?

According to the NAACP Criminal Justice Project, there are 54 women on death row in the United States (as of April 1, 2019).

Until April 1, 2019, 16 women have been executed since the reinstatement of the death penalty.

Death penalty against minors

Twenty-two people were executed between 1976 and 2005 for crimes committed as minors.

On March 1, 2005, the Supreme Court ruled that the execution of juvenile offenders is unconstitutional.

Clemency Requests

Since 1976, 288 people have obtained clemency.

For federal inmates sentenced to death, only the president has the power to grant forgiveness.
