Donald Trump announces interrogation of US diplomat's wife

2019-10-10T15:05:26.932Z

The wife of a US diplomat is said to have caused a fatal accident in the UK. She then left the country - the British are outraged. Now US President Trump says: "This can happen."

In the case of the accidental death of a young British now turns US President Donald Trump. According to British police, the wife of a US diplomat may have been sitting at the wheel of the accident car. The 42-year-old is officially suspected, it said. The problem: The woman has since left the country - and therefore causes great excitement in the UK.

Trump called what happened "a terrible accident" and announced that the American authorities would talk to the driver. The woman had driven on the wrong side of the street, so it had come to a collision. "And that can happen," Trump said. He explained to journalists that they drive in the UK on the left-hand side of the road while driving in the United States on the right-hand side.

British Prime Minister demands return of diplomatic wife

At the end of August, 19-year-old Harry Dunn was riding his motorcycle when he crashed into a car near a British military base in Oxford. US Air Force forces are also working on the military site. Dunn died in hospital shortly after the collision.

Many Britons do not see the case as settled. The British Prime Minister's office said Boris Johnson had talked to Trump on Wednesday about this matter and urged him to return the person to the UK and work with the police so that "Harry's family can find justice".

As early as Monday, Johnson had said that the diplomatic immunity, which actually applies to the emissaries of other countries, was not provided for such cases. The alleged accident raider had used her protection against prosecution wrongfully to get out of the country.

Trump has not yet commented on the possibility of lifting the immunity of the woman and allowing charges in the UK. He merely said that his government would "see what we can come up with".

The mother of the killed 19-year-old is angry about the behavior of the suspects. Earlier this week, she said about the driver, "If she had stayed here and stood up to us, I could have forgiven her, but forgive her for getting away, I can not do that yet."
