(CNN) - An estimated 100,000 people have been displaced since the beginning of Turkey's military offensive in northeastern Syria on Wednesday, according to a United Nations statement on Friday.

"The majority are being refugees in host communities, but an increasing number of them are arriving at collective shelters in the city of Al Hassakeh and Tal Tamer," the statement said. Many of these people seek refuge in schools in those areas.

The city of Al Hassakeh has also been affected by the fighting. A water station that serves the city has stopped working, affecting the 400,000 people in "Al Hassakeh and the surrounding areas that depend on this water source."
