The anti-Semitic rampage in Halle also alerted the Bundeswehr. According to SPIEGEL information completed Stephan Balliet eight years ago, his military service, while he was also trained on assault rifle G36.

After Stephan Balliet shot dead two people in Halle, internal investigations are also taking place in the Bundeswehr. Shortly after the anti-Semitic rampage on Tuesday began the Military Abschirmdienst (MAD) in their own archives to investigate whether the Stephan Balliet has links to the Bundeswehr, as his father had given appropriate evidence.

The results are now available. According to SPIEGEL information from the end of 2010 to 2011, the then 18-year-old was one of the last recruits to do away with conscription and thus completed his six-month military service at Panzergrenadierbetaillon 401 in Hagenow (Mecklenburg-Vorpommern). Balliet also completed his three-month basic training there, while he was trained on assault rifle G36 and the P8 pistol.

After his deed, the MAD feverishly sighted his personal file. The fear was great that one might have overlooked clues to his right-wing mind while he was with the troop.

But the Bundeswehr's guns are as inconspicuous as his remaining resume. For example, after completing basic training in the barracks, Balliet served but was not particularly noticeable to anyone. He showed no particular ambition, according to the file, otherwise he would have applied in his army time for a special training such as a solo fighter training.

The MAD was during service never on a possible right-wing attitude of the soldier Balliet attentive. However, in contrast to Bundeswehr newcomers, basic military service providers were not subjected to any security clearance by the military intelligence service today.

This measure was introduced only recently, since it was feared that Islamists could infiltrate the Bundeswehr and use the local training for attacks.

Meanwhile, there is a kind of relief in the Bundeswehr leadership that the suspect did not receive any special training. "In retrospect, we can be glad that he did not learn much from the Bundeswehr, otherwise he could have killed considerably more people in Halle," says an army general.
