New York (CNN Business) - Carlsberg is approaching its goal of selling beer in paper bottles.

This Thursday, the Danish beer company unveiled two new recyclable prototypes of the wood fiber bottle of sustainable origin, which it hopes to bring to the market. One version is coated with a thin film of recycled PET plastic to prevent the beer from leaking. The other uses a biological based coating. Prototypes will be used to test the coatings.

For Carlsberg, innovation is a way of reducing its impact on the environment and presenting consumers with an interesting new option.

Fiber bottles are better for the environment than aluminum or glass because they are obtained sustainably and because the material has a "very low impact on the production process," said Myriam Shingleton, vice president of Group Development at Carlsberg.

"The energy and efficiency of the technology we are using" reduce carbon emissions compared to other production processes, he said.

Carlsberg started working on the new type of bottleneck in 2015 and is still a few years away, at least, from selling the bottle to customers. One reason why it takes so long to develop an effective paper bottle is that Carlsberg needs to make sure that the new package does not alter the taste of your carbonated beverage, and because the types of materials you are looking for, such as the base coating polymer biological, are not commercially available.

To move forward, Carlsberg has partnered with experts in packaging and other companies. This Thursday, Carlsberg said Absolut, Coca-Cola and L'Oréal join their efforts to develop effective paper packaging. More partners can help increase the overall demand for the type of materials you need.

Shingleton noted that Carlsberg does not expect to replace his cans and bottles with the new model. Instead, the company wants to offer its customers another option.

Carlsberg is not the only company that is becoming creative about its packaging.

Unilever has tested soap-shaped shampoo bars, bamboo toothbrushes, cardboard deodorant bars and reusable packages to help you meet your sustainability goals. PepsiCo and Coca-Cola have shared plans to start selling water in aluminum cans to reduce the use of plastic containers. Adidas is making recyclable shoes, and Procter & Gamble is testing rechargeable packages for the Olay moisturizer.

Carlsberg has already launched some innovations that help reduce waste.

Last year, the company began selling beers in "instant packages." The packages have beer cans that were held together, rather than held together by plastic rings that often end up polluting the ocean and can damage the lives of animals. It took Carlsberg and his partners three years to develop the technology.
