Red Sea: Iran reports explosion on oil tanker

In the Red Sea, an oil tanker is said to have caught fire off the Saudi Arabian coast. Iranian news agencies report that there has been an explosion. The state oil company speaks of a rocket attack.



According to Iranian media reports, there has apparently been an explosion on an oil tanker in the Red Sea. Iran's oil ministry confirmed the news that the tanker should be owned by the National Iranian Oil Company.

Iran's oil giant Nioc said the tanker "Sinopa" had been hit by two missiles. According to the state-run Iranian news agency Irna, the ship was about 100 kilometers from the Saudi Arabian port of Jeddah when the incident happened.

According to Irna, experts on the ship are investigating the cause of the explosion, suggesting an attack. The extent of damage on board was conflicting.
