"The three ???" - Spokesman Oliver Rohrbeck: Keep listening

Rohrbeck: Rather vague. At that time, radio play producer Heikedine Körting still had the studio in Hamburg's Agnesstraße. Andreas Fröhlich, spokesman for Bob Andrews, and I always flew by plane from Berlin to Hamburg. The wall was still standing, everything else would have been incredibly difficult and time-consuming. For us guys that was incredibly exciting at 14: drink tomato juice and go to Hamburg with Pan Am.

one day: You flew unaccompanied?

Rohrbeck: I insisted on that. Only Andreas and me. I was very self-employed, had previously made the "five friends" with Mrs. Körting and was used to that. It started at the age of eleven - on Sundays alone by taxi to the airport and check in. I always thought it was terrible when children with a breast bag were handed over and the helicopter parents shivered that the boy was well received and that the stewardess was best placed in the first row. Embarrassing.

one day: If you compare - what has changed since the first episode?

Rohrbeck: As far as the content is concerned, we initially only had one telephone, then the answering machine was added, later even a modern fax machine. In the meantime we google. And Bob does not have to go to his father's newspaper archive to research. The stories are much longer today, almost too long for my taste, almost 75 minutes. What fits on a CD. It used to be 50 minutes before the children were allowed to sleep (laughs) . As before, no corpses, no blood, more tension. We suspect that we are now 17 or 18 years old, so today avoid sentences like "I still have to do my homework".

one day: And as far as production is concerned?

Rohrbeck: For about five years, a computer has been connected to the mixer and recorded the voice recording for safety. But mixing and playing music and sounds, that still happens completely analog.

one day: What was the most bizarre noise prop in the 40 years?

Rohrbeck: That is absurd every time. When we sit in Peter's MG - I still wonder how the three fit with an obese Justus Jonas in such a small two-seater sports car - we get in the studio leather straps and bags on the lap and should rumknautschen on it, as if the car shakes and we sit on leather. Once we should rattle with keys, there was just a couple of handcuffs around, that sounded great. Andreas accidentally touched her wrist, the key was missing ...

one day: And since then he is sitting in Mrs. Körtings villa?

Rohrbeck: He actually had to take a taxi to Davidwache and let the police remove the handcuffs.

one day: Do you have certain rituals in the studio?

Rohrbeck: We have our fixed seats and actually always go out to eat steak. Even after 40 years, we sweeten Mrs. Körting, she duzt us. That will never change. Sometimes actors come in for the first time and are allowed to direct them directly. We stay with you.

one day: You are now 54 and still speak an 18 year old. How does it work?

Rohrbeck: As an actor, I have to think of a role for an attitude. So if I play a teenager, my voice changes automatically. We do not disguise our votes. When I talk about Gru from the movie "I - just incorrigible", he has a completely different attitude and sounds very different from Justus Jonas. Most people do not recognize me there.

One Day: Geneticist David Sinclair just said there's nothing wrong with us turning 200 years old. Eternal youth, would that be something for you?

Rohrbeck: Not at all. Of course we all wish to stay physically young as long as possible, but I do not want to be 17 anymore. Today, I no longer need the naivety with which I went through life, and I find it more beautiful to have the wider view of a mature person. Even though I now wear varifocals (laughs) .

one day: With the live show you fill big arenas several times in a row. Do you sometimes wonder about the hype when you're on tour?

Rohrbeck: Every time I get into such a huge hall, I feel a great reverence and humility. I was never prepared for that. As an actor you perform in theaters in front of a maximum of 1000 people. You can handle that, but if you suddenly face 10,000 people, it's an incredibly uplifting feeling. In some arenas I go before the soundcheck, climb with the light to the ceiling and look from above into the empty hall. That totally fascinates me.

One day: The meanwhile 201 radio play episodes were sold more than 50 million copies. Do you have an explanation for the persistently large fan base?

Rohrbeck: That can not be properly explained. Of course it has to do with childhood. The older fans were allowed to hear us fall asleep in bed and remember the feeling of being fascinated, longing for it. Now they pass it on to their own children.

One day: Nostalgia certainly plays a big role.

Rohrbeck: Sure. In a way, we mediate a perfect world, even though the three reveal untruths and injustices. But you have endless time for it. A wonderful idea. Today people lack time in all situations. A 45-year-old goes to bed and, instead of thinking about the stress of everyday life, immerses himself in a cosmos in which time does not matter. I think that is a major factor of success.

one day: What do you do if you can not fall asleep?

Rohrbeck: I read. And wake up someday with a book on my head.

one day: How many times have you dreamed of being Justus Jonas in the 40 years?

Rohrbeck: I do not think so. I have also spoken so many films and have never dreamed of "ET", "Breakfast Club" or "The Club of the Dead Poets". Whether radio play or dubbing, I can leave the studio and clear my cache in my head. That must be so, otherwise I would constantly only loose fragments of history in the head.

one day: Do you have a favorite story of the "three question marks"?

Rohrbeck: The episode "The Empty Grave" was great because Justus became more emotional and not, as everything else, rationally understands and explains. His parents, actually dead for ten years, suddenly come out of the South American jungle when he falls into a deep hole. For me it was a way to show Justus a slightly different side. "Night in fear" or the very old episode "The Carpathian dog" I found super. But I'm not as expert as fans who keep hearing the episodes up and down.

Rohrbeck: I have already signed on blind sticks, wheelchairs, often on baby bodysuits of people who call their children Justus. These are quite a lot now, I should then write "Justus for Justus". And I have actually signed on a calf, the Lord has tattooed this afterwards. Crazy, right? On his calf is now Oliver Rohrbeck. Alright ...

one day: Some years ago you said that you did not know if you would like to be on stage at the age of 55 or with the radio play. Now give Justus on your 55th birthday.

Rohrbeck: I could not have imagined that that would be possible for so long, but in recent years it has become even more successful. There is no downward trend, so you would say: It's getting awkward, let's stop it. We will not cancel the sails as long as people want to hear us.
