(CNN) - The son of former Vice President Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, announced that he will resign at the end of the month from his position on the board of directors of a private equity fund backed by Chinese state entities, according to a statement issued on Sunday by your lawyer.

The announcement comes when President Donald Trump continues his attacks on the Biden in the midst of a political trial investigation into his attempts to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky - during a July 25 phone call - to investigate the former vice president. That call is the focus of a complaint of informants at the center of the Democrats' investigation.

Trump has prompted an unproven accusation that Joe Biden was trying to improperly help Hunter, who was part of the board of a Ukrainian natural gas company, when the then vice president pressured the Ukrainian government to fire the country's attorney general . The Obama administration, the US allies, the International Monetary Fund and the Ukrainian anti-corruption activists, among others, had made it clear that they were disgusted with the performance of Viktor Shokin, who became attorney general in 2015.

There is no evidence of irregularities either by Joe or Hunter Biden.

Hunter Biden also promised not to work for any foreign-owned company or serve on their meetings if his father is elected president, according to the statement provided by attorney George Mesires. Bloomberg first reported on Hunter Biden's promise and his decision to resign.

"Hunter always understood that his father would be guided, totally and unequivocally, by established US policy, regardless of its effects on Hunter's professional interests," the statement said. "He never anticipated the barrage of false accusations against him and his father by the president of the United States."

A Biden campaign advisor said they were alerted yesterday that the ad was coming, but they didn't know it before that day. The adviser also did not know why it had taken weeks for this to happen, sending questions to Hunter Biden's lawyer. The person said that Joe Biden now has a much stricter standard than Trump's for his children.

A Biden spokesman told CNN that the campaign has no additional comments on the statement by Hunter Biden's lawyer.

But Biden referred to the political trial investigation about Trump later Sunday while talking to reporters in Altoona, Iowa, at the United Food and Commercial Workers forum.

When asked why voters should worry about the political trial, he acknowledged that he was an objective of Trump's rhetoric, but suggested that the investigation was inevitable.

"I could be the last man to publicly request a political trial, but I am the reason why the political trial is happening," he said, and then added: "I think there is no other option at this time, none at all. Not only because I am the target, it is not hurting me. ”

For his part, the president continued his attacks on Hunter Biden on Twitter early Sunday, saying: “Where is Hunter? It has completely disappeared! ” Trump did not mention the reports of Biden's statement in his tweet.
