The Danish government wants to deprive fighters of the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) with a double passport of Danish citizenship.
The current situation in the border area between Turkey and Syria poses a considerable risk - also because the Kurdish militias are imprisoning numerous IS fighters there. Those who also had a Danish passport could soon be on their way to Denmark, said Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. They represented a danger to the Danish community and were "undesirable".
Therefore, the government wants to ask the parliament in Copenhagen to deal quickly with a legislative proposal, according to which such fighters with two passports, the Danish citizenship could be withdrawn, while they were still abroad.
The proposal only applies to fighters with two passes - who only has a Danish passport should not lose it. This would mean that the individual becomes stateless.
Some IS fighters are said to have already escaped
The Danish government had already reacted harshly in February when US President Donald Trump called for several European countries to withdraw IS fighters. The Kurdish militias in northern Syria, until recently allies of the USA, urgently wanted to get rid of foreign IS fighters.
The Federal Government also expressed itself cautiously and brought in June a law by the Bundestag, which makes it possible for fighters of "terrorist associations" with a double passport German citizenship - also known as IS fighters.
Turkey had begun its long-planned military offensive in northern Syria on Wednesday last week. It is directed against the Kurdish militias who rule a large area in the northern Syrian border area. In the region there are camps, in which several fighters and supporters of the IS sit. Some of them are said to have escaped during the fighting.
