Here you will find the most important news of the day, the most popular stories of SPIEGEL + and tips for your end of workday.

The topic of the day: North Syria under pressure

Turkey is moving to northern Syria, the Kurds are calling on the Assad regime and IS militants are fleeing the prisons. This is the situation to the east of the Euphrates, seven days after US President Donald Trump withdrew American support from the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG.

Acting of the US president triggered a chain reaction. Five days ago, Turkey began its offensive on Kurdish areas in northern Syria. The Syrian-Kurdish self-government has already collapsed. In a statement, the Kurds asked Bashar al-Assad's regime to regain control. The deal was apparently brokered by Russia. The government in Damascus is said to have sent first troops to the Syrian-Turkish border. Turkey reacted militarily.

In the first days of the Turkish offensive several civilians were targeted. On Saturday, the Kurdish politician Havrin Khalaf died, Kurdish media called her death an execution on the street. On Sunday, at least ten people were killed in an air raid on a convoy of civilians and foreign journalists. In total, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has at least 52 civilian deaths.

The EU is largely powerless over the events. Member States of the European Union have again called on Turkey to immediately stop the offensive. But for the time being, the EU does not want to impose a general arms embargo on Turkey. A statement merely refers to the decisions of countries such as Germany and France to stop authorizing arms exports from now on. Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn fears that the NATO states could be involved in a war. Such an "alliance case", which occurs when a NATO country (such as Turkey) is attacked, but is considered highly unlikely.

The number of the day: three hours

What you could do: Tonight the German Book Prize will be awarded. Time for you to take a look at the shortlist. As well as the "origin" of Saša Stanišic, there is also the new Eifel novel by Norbert Scheuer. "Winter bees" tells of two brothers during the Nazi era. My colleague Volker Weidermann finds an "insistent social novel". Just read it in.
