ISTANBUL - Turkish authorities on Friday arrested four mayors belonging to a party

Istanbul-SANA

The authorities of the Turkish regime today arrested four mayors belonging to the opposition People's Democratic Party (Peoples' Party) as part of its repressive measures to expose the voices of its opponents and prevent them from expressing their opposition to its policies, especially its aggression on Syrian territory.

The mayors of Hakkari, Yukskova, Ergesh and Nusaybin, southeastern Turkey, all members of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP), were arrested as part of large-scale arrests and investigations into what they called the fight against terrorism, the Anatolia news agency said.

Dozens of criminal cases have been opened against people across the country for criticizing the Turkish aggression on Syrian territory a week ago, including the leaders of the People's Party Sisay Timeli and Perveen Boldan following their statements against the aggression.

One of the party's founders, Salahuddin Demirtas, has been in prison since November 2016 and several mayors belonging to the party have been sacked.

The authorities of the Turkish regime arrested last August 418 people in 29 provinces in Turkey under the pretext of links to the PKK.

The Turkish regime is waging widespread repression in southeast Turkey after reneging on its promises under a 2012 peace deal with the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) and targeting northern Iraq under the pretext of fighting PKK elements.
