"If you would understand something of politics": Erdogan insults Foreign Minister Maas

2019-10-16T09:02:24.553Z

Erdogan is against any criticism of the Turkish offensive in Syria. He reacted to the restriction of German armaments exports with a personal attack on Foreign Minister Maas.

In his own country, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is rigorously opposed to critics of the North Syrian offensive. That does not help him on an international stage. As the president then ever falls back on ridicule. The target of his latest attack is German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

After the restriction of German arms exports to Turkey, Erdogan personally attacked the SPD politician. "Here comes the German foreign minister - a man who does not know his borders - and says: We will not sell arms to Turkey, we are finished," said Erdogan. Not he, but Maas, Germany, would lose.

Maas is also arrogant and have no idea about politics; he is a dilettante. "If you understood politics, you would not speak that way," Erdogan told Maas.

Delivery permits are not taken back

Restricting arms exports to Turkey has been the only sanction from Germany since last Wednesday when the Turkish offensive against Kurdish militias in northern Syria began. The export of weapons that can be used in the conflict is no longer approved. Other arms deals will continue to be allowed. Already issued delivery approvals are not taken back.

Erdogan also categorically rejected US demands for an immediate ceasefire in his talks with journalists. The Turkish troops would have to reach their destination, and that was the establishment of a protection zone along the border.

Turkey wants to set up a strip about 500 kilometers long and 30 kilometers deep under its sole control and relocate Syrian refugees there. The Kurdish militias, who have so far controlled a large part of the area in northern Syria, consider them terrorists.

On Wednesday, US Vice President Mike Pence, along with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, set out on a mediation mission in the conflict between Turkey and Kurdish militias. For Thursday, according to the White House, a meeting of pence with Erdogan is planned.
