Guesswork on symbolic action: Kim's ride on the sacred mountain

2019-10-16T09:56:24.874Z

North Korea's ruler Kim Jong Un rode his horse to the highest mountain in his country. The political augurs whisper: That's how big changes are always announced. Only: which ones?

In North Korea, the state media regularly inform about the "Activities Kim Jong Us". Now photos have been published, which are already interpreted in the neighboring country of South Korea as a possible indication of a major action. Shown is the North Korean ruler on the back of a white horse. Kim poses with the animal on the highest mountain of the Korean peninsula.

The ruler had climbed the paektu, "riding on a white horse through the first snow," was said in the state media. The 2750 meter high volcano is revered as a sacred mountain by both South and North Koreans. In Stalinist North Korea, he is also considered a symbol of the ruling family.

"Overflowing emotions and joy"

"His march on horseback on Mount Paektu is a major event of major importance in the history of the Korean revolution," it said. The officials who accompanied him were convinced with "exuberant emotions and joy that there would be a big project that would astonish the world".

The Paektu climbed: Kim does not pose the first time on the mountain

When the shots that show Kim, among others, on the back of the galloping horse, emerged, is unclear. It is not the first time that Kim has taken photos of herself on the mountain on the border with China. South Korea has speculated that the excursion to the Paektu, as it has done several times before, could be followed by an important political decision.

The Kim Dynasty has been in power in the impoverished but well-equipped state for some 70 years. When Kim Jong Un came to power in late 2011, he also took on the personality cult of his grandfather Kim Il Sung and his son Kim Jong Il.
