(CNN) - A dozen Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Ohio for the fourth debate of the 2020 elections, the largest group to participate in a single debate.

I saw it, took notes, tweeted and chose some of the best and worst of the night. My winners and losers are below.

WINNERS

Pete Buttigieg

The mayor of South Bend had a clear goal in the debate: to beat Elizabeth Warren for her support of the “Medicare for all” program and make sure that Democratic voters knew she had an alternative plan that would not eliminate the private health insurance market . Mission accomplished. And remember: the polls I have seen make it clear that voters prefer a plan that retains the right to choose a private insurance plan than one that gets rid of the private market in favor of a government-run plan. Buttigieg did not stop there. Her response to representative Tulsi Gabbard's call to end the "endless wars" was powerful, relying heavily on her own military service. He criticized former representative Beto O'Rourke for gun control, with one of the lines of the night: "I don't need your lessons on courage, political or personal." From beginning to end, Buttigieg was a dominant force. Yes, some will say he was "ruthless." But the debates - and the primaries! - They try to draw contrasts, and that's what Buttigieg did. And he did very well.

Andrew Yang

If three months ago I had told you that in mid-October there would be a prolonged conversation in a Democratic debate about the dangers of automation, you would have laughed at me. And yet, we were there on Tuesday night: a complete debate within the debate about Yang's pet problem. It is a testament to Yang's remarkable progress in this race, second only to Buttigieg's, and the fact that he is already having a significant impact on the conversation within the Democratic Party. In addition, that "MATH" pin was direct.

Amy Klobuchar

At the moment, the Minnesota senator has not qualified for the next debate in November. Knowing that, Tuesday night was his last great opportunity to make an effective move. And to her immense credit, she launched herself for it. Knowing that Warren is now the favorite (more on that below), Klobuchar went after her. "Your idea is not the only one," Klobuchar told Warren in a moment. In another, he tried to clarify that Warren did not have the monopoly of "bold" ideas. In another moment, he accused Warren of "taking Republican conversation topics at this time." I'm not sure anything changes in the polls. But she deserves the credit for giving her best punches.

Bernie Sanders

If you were watching the debate to see how Sanders was doing in the wake of his recent heart attack, well, he was the same old Bernie: irascible, impatient, cunning, funny and without complexes about his liberal solutions to the problems facing the country. At a key moment in Sanders' night, he was asked a question about his health, and he muttered something like "I'm fine" and then turned to talk about politics. In addition, it is not more than the news that the representative of New York, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would support it, came up during the debate.

LOSERS

Elizabeth Warren

Welcome to the favorite condition! Although polls suggest that Warren and Joe Biden are the main candidates, on Tuesday night it became clear that the other 11 candidates on stage saw the Massachusetts senator as the most important. Which, in theory, is a good thing for her! But in practice, it didn't work well. Buttigieg began by attacking her on Medicare for everyone, and Warren could not offer a clear answer about a) whether he would raise taxes on middle-class Americans and b) if not, how he would find the money to finance the plan. The blows kept coming. According to my calculations, at least seven candidates attacked Warren at some point during the night, and although he is still very capable of debating, he could not stop all those attacks effectively. In addition, the statement that he would like to see the United States military presence disappear completely from the Middle East will return to pursue it.

Joe biden

I wrote today that Biden needed a performance that was not only “good for Biden,” but good in any case. He approached but, in my opinion, did not do enough. (It is worth noting: I think this was Biden's best performance in a debate; his answer about his age and his health was probably the best response he has given in the debate season). The answer about his son, Hunter, and Ukraine was "meh": "My son's statement speaks for itself" was the best he could say, knowing that this question would come? And maybe it will look differently in the replay, but Biden's shout "I got you votes" to Warren didn't feel so good right now. I understand the argument that Biden did not receive major blows in this debate and stayed away from the canvas. But ask yourself: is it the right standard for a former vice president and leader in this race to make a difference?

Kamala Harris

Nothing Harris did on Tuesday night will change his career, downward in this race. His phrase "Dude got to go" on Trump vanished, as if the audience had lived through it before. Harris's attempt to force Warren to agree with her that Donald Trump's Twitter account should be suspended felt short and not very effective. Harris simply has not been able to recover the magic he had in that first debate. Tuesday night was another fan and fail.

Tom steyer

When the most interesting thing about you in the debate is that you were wearing a plaid Christmas tie, you didn't have a good debate.

Bing

It has been a difficult decade for the Microsoft search engine. And Yang reminded us all of that failure on Tuesday night. Well, we will always have those original Bing ads!
