(CNN) - Finally, after 15 frustrating seasons, the Washington Nationals arrive at the World Series for the first time.
The Nats beat the St. Louis Cardinals with a score of 7 to 4 on Tuesday night to conclude a resounding sweep in four games and claim the title as National League champions.
Now the team will sit and wait to see which ninth of the American League will face. The Astros beat the Yankees 4-1 in Game 3 at Yankee Stadium in New York on Tuesday and lead the American League Championship series seven two games to one. Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday, if the weather permits.
The Nationals began playing in the capital of the United States in 2005 when the Montreal Expos moved there. The Nats were a success ... and a big disappointment.
The team won four titles in the Eastern Division of the National League, only to lose each time in the first round of the playoffs.
That changed this year. The team closed strong to finish second in the Eastern Division of the National League and beat the Milwaukee Brewers to claim the wild card status.
The Nationals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series and then overwhelmed the Cardinals.
The Nationals are the first team in the nation's capital to advance to the World Series since in 1993 the Washington Senators lost to the New York Yankees in five games.
The only other baseball franchise that never made it to the World Series: the Seattle Mariners.
The Boston Red Sox are currently the reigning champions. They won the World Series last year, defeating the Dodgers 5-1 in Game 5 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles.
The Astros and the Yankees meet again on Wednesday night.
