Since the US President Trump re-sanctioned Iranian crude oil, China remains the largest importer of Iranian crude oil. In May, President Trump strengthened US sanctions to zero Iranian crude oil exports.

On September 25, the United States imposed sanctions on five Chinese and two affiliates of China Ocean Transportation (COSCO) for transporting Iranian crude oil against the sanctions.

A few days later, according to the ship tracking data of Refinitive Icon, 14 ships, about one third of the vessels owned by COSCO affiliated Dalian Chu-Tonkai Oil Transportation Co., Transmission of position information from the automatic identification device was stopped.

Dalian Chu-Tonghai Oil Transportation Co., Ltd. explained by e-mail that none of its ships had switched off the AIS controller or stopped sending AIS signals. “The company will continue to comply with applicable laws and regulations when operating its business.”
