BEIJING (Reuters) - China on Thursday criticized a US decision to oblige Chinese diplomats to report to the State Department before meeting any local officials in the United States.
"We urge the United States to correct its mistakes, repeal this decision and provide support and facilities to Chinese diplomats in the United States instead of artificially erecting barriers," Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang was quoted as saying.
Ging said the reason given by Washington to justify this behavior by claiming that Beijing was restricting the activities of US diplomats was "baseless", stressing that Beijing "has consistently supported US diplomats in China."
The United States yesterday issued a resolution requiring Chinese diplomats to notify the State Department before the meeting of US officials, whether federal or local.
