US wants to hold G7 summit in Trump Hotel

2019-10-17T18:14:25.616Z

The G7 summit will take place next year in a hotel owned by US President Donald Trump. The now officially announced a spokesman for the White House.

The US government is hosting the summit of the seven major industrialized nations (G7) next year in a hotel run by President Donald Trump. Miami's Trump National Doral is by far the best site for the meeting, White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said.

With this, Trump has apparently been able to implement his plan to hold the summit in one of his ministries. "It's almost as if they built this facility to host such an event," Mulvaney told the press briefing. There is no conflict of interest. The president made it clear that he has not benefited since he was in the White House, Mulvaney said.

"Most monstrous example of corruption"

Even as Trump announced his plan, he met with massive criticism. Democrat Ron Wyden, a high-ranking member of the Finance Committee, said in a written statement that the G7 Summit "under no circumstances" should be held at Trump's resort in Dural. That would be "one of the most outrageous examples of corruption and self-dealing" in a presidency that already has many such cases. To call allies to spend money in their own hotel would be an "insult" to the other leaders of the G7.

The G7 summits take place once a year. Members of the G7 are besides the USA also Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Great Britain. The meeting is an informal forum of heads of state and government from seven powerful democracies. From 1998 to 2017, Russia also belonged to the district. The members always meet once a year in one of the countries.
