Three people were killed after gunmen raided an airport in Brazil in an attempt to steal money from an armored vehicle before fleeing and holding a mother and a child hostage.
Three attackers were killed during the incident, which began at the cargo terminal at Viracopos airport, 100 km from Sao Paulo, AFP quoted a spokeswoman for the Brazilian military police as saying.
Two gunmen were killed and a policeman was wounded in an exchange of fire in the airport terminal, while at least one gunman managed to escape to a nearby residential area where a mother and her child were taken hostage in their home, the spokeswoman said.
For his part, the news site Ji One that the hostages were released after a sniper killed the gunman and did not know the number of gunmen involved in the theft.
A number of trucks were used to block a highway leading to the airport in an attempt to disrupt police access to the attack site.
The airport operator said the flights were suspended for 20 minutes after the attackers entered the cargo terminal on two trucks that matched the trucks of aviation authorities.
Police said the assailants escaped with unspecified amounts from an armored truck belonging to the American company Brinks.
The incident comes three months after the theft of about $ 30 million worth of gold from Sao Paulo International Airport, where Brinx was transporting the precious metal as well at the time.
