The White House announcement of hosting a summit of the Group of Seven industrialized nations at one of President Donald Trump's resorts has sparked controversy and criticism among lawmakers and civil society alike.
The White House announced yesterday that the president will host at the "Trump National Golf Club Doral" the annual meeting of the leaders of the major industrialized countries in the world scheduled from 10 to 12 of June 2020.
"This decision is a flawed example of the president's corruption," said Jerry Nadler, the Democratic chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
"It's not just a conflict of interest, it's also against the constitution," said Senator Richard Blumenthal, a Democrat.
Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics, which focuses on conflict of interest issues in the American political class, said: "It's almost unbelievable and there is no question whatsoever that the US government has been used as a public relations and publicity subsidiary of Trump Organization."
The G7 groups France, Italy, Japan, Germany, the United States and Britain, as well as Canada, which joined the grouping in 1976.
