Turkish military offensive in Syria: constitutional protection fears return of IS fighters

2019-10-18T09:08:25.802Z

The chaos in northern Syria could lead to IS fighters being released and infiltrated into Europe, warns intelligence chief Thomas Haldenwang in SPIEGEL - and "unnoticed in the worst case".

The withdrawal of the USA from Syria could worsen the security situation in Germany clearly according to the protection of the constitution. "I have the concern that the IS regains strength," warns the President of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Thomas Haldenwang, in SPIEGEL.

"The conflict in northern Syria could also lead to foreign IS fighters being released from prisons and returning to Europe, in the worst case unnoticed," Haldenwang said. "The security authorities have to be vigilant here."

According to an internal list of the Federal Government were in Syria last 84 supporters of the terrorist militia "Islamic State" (IS) imprisoned with a German passport. A third of them are classified by the police as a threat, 19 men and 8 women. The authorities trust them with serious acts of violence, including attacks.

More than 50 German IS supporters are likely to remain at large for the time being, at least for the time being. Unlike many men, their actions on the former territory of the "Islamic State" (IS) are often not sufficient for an arrest warrant.

After the beginning of the military invasion of Turkey, according to SPIEGEL information, at least four women from Germany have already escaped from a detention center in northern Syria.
