LONDON (Reuters) - The British House of Commons on Thursday approved an amendment requiring Prime Minister Boris Johnson to negotiate with Brussels the postponement of Britain's planned departure from the European Union on January 31.
British lawmakers approved by 322 votes to 306 the amendment by MP Oliver Litwin, which aims to give MPs more time to discuss Johnson's agreement with Brussels without risking Brexit without an agreement.
Johnson was quick to announce his rejection of the request from Brussels to postpone the deadline for Brexit, insisting that the country's exit from the Union will be at the end of this month.
"I will not negotiate with the EU for another postponement of Brexit, not even the law forcing me to do so," Johnson said.
The economic community fears an exit without agreement because it could lead to the British government itself to lead to a shortage of food, fuel and even medicines.
