CSU base makes vote at party congress against women's quota

2019-10-19T10:37:37.851Z

Bavaria's Prime Minister Söder wants to make the CSU female with a new regulation of the female quota. At the party congress, he receives strong headwinds for this plan - but also support.

Parts of the CSU base have strongly criticized the planned by the party executive introduction of a women's quota at the party congress in Munich. "You can not scourge the Greens as a patronizing party and then introduce a women's quota," said about Holm Putzke, CSU district chairman in Passau. It must apply in the party the best principle, no quota regulation.

Similarly, Robert Simm from Dachau commented on the women's quota: "We do not need this, this party opens all doors for women." If you want to become something, come into office and dignity. "The measure is undemocratic, you do not have to go along with every nonsense." The goal, which has the quota for women, is "wonderful, but with the crowbar that is not possible."

Congress is to vote on Saturday on women's quota

With a party reform that includes a total of 75 points, the CSU executive wants to make the party more modern, younger, female and the leading digital party in Germany. According to point 63 of the lead application - "widening the female membership base" - the women's quota of 40 percent, which already applies today in the CSU at the district and party executive level, should be extended to the district associations. The smaller board members - chairmen, vice-presidents, treasurers, secretaries - will in future even be in equal numbers. The reform will be finalized on Saturday.

Ulrike Scharf, chairman of the Women's Union in the CSU, appealed to the delegates to include the women's quota in the party's constitution. Nobody wanted to be a "quota woman" in the CSU, but without these tools, party reform would not be possible. "As a People's Party, we will only have a future if we are a reflection of society," Scharf said. And these are 50 percent women and men. In the CSU, however, the proportion of women is only 21 percent.
